I haven't been reading the Harry Bosch titles in order and did not realize that this was one of the earlier books. It was well written and we get a sense of who the man called Harry Bosch is.. IMO, he is a cop's cop and will even buck the 'brass' when he is finding the 'glue' that ties a crime to the criminal. Mr. Connelly's writings capture the deep melancholy and danger of the not so glamorous L.A. life.
I really enjoyed this book and have yet to be disappointed with Michael Connelly's excellent, intriguing, exciting mystery/suspense stories.

A great read. Connelly's writing in the first third / half of the book is superb and while the second half is a bit less so, the whole book is tautly done. Bosch is a great character.

The second in the Harry Bosch series and a good, complicated, involving thriller with a final twist.

The second book in a great Harry Bosch series. Connelly is an easy read. But when the pieces of the puzzle begin to click together in the last several chapters, the story becomes a real page turner. As the action picks up, you may find yourself reaching for the seatbelt on your easy chair. My ritual is to read about an hour before bedtime. I stayed up late to finish The Black Ice that night.

Michael Connelly writes while listening to jazz and his alter, Bosch, same. I loved this one although he does get a bit tidier in subsequent books. _____ It’s all Connelly/Bosch all the time. We NEVER leave him and I’m spoiled now. I hate the “Pulp Fiction” derivatives every one tries to market. One needs to BE Bosch just as Connelly needs. I listen to jazz frequently while reading, I mean being. -— Connelly and Bosch are the same personality type, 8 soil, mountain; in the Japanese system. The qualities are as we experience, very briefly: very smart and single-minded of purpose. -— Yeah, it could be boring, but it’s Bosch; and he/you are ALWAYS exciting. Every second with this guy ticks... If these were thrillers I’d wet my pants!

This was his second book. He gets much better later on in his career.

I've now read 2 Bosch novels....The Black Echo and now The Black Ice.

I liked Black Echo quite a bit but this just did not work for me at all. Some have said the twist at the end was good. Maybe it was but by the time I got there I was so bored I just didn't care.

I recommend skipping this one.

Bosch is a great character - dark enough to be interesting, but not too much so.
