The second book to feature Scotland Yard investigator Adam Dalgliesh, A Mind To Murder is a "superbly satisfying mystery" ( Chicago Daily News ) from bestselling author P.D. James.

On the surface, the Steen Psychiatric Clinic is one of the most reputable institutions in London. But when the administrative head is found dead with a chisel in her heart, that distinguished facade begins to crumble as the truth emerges. Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard is called in to investigate and quickly finds himself caught in a whirlwind of psychiatry, drugs, and deceit. Now he must analyze the deep-seated anxieties and thwarted desires of patients and staff alike to determine which of their unresolved conflicts has resulted in murder and stop a cunning killer before the next blow.

This mystery was originally written in 1963, when LSD and electroconvulsive therapy were more widely used than they are now. But not all the psychiatrists at Steen Clinic approve, and there is considerable hidden conflict among the staff. The administrative officer, who is not a psychiatrist, and not particularly well liked, is found with a chisel expertly applied to her heart. Dalgliesh is called in--from a boring party celebrating his most recent book of poetry. The staff has already done the right thing--segregated patients into one room, staff into another, awaiting his arrival. He soon sends the patients home, and focuses on the staff. Many have opportunity, but who has motive? Too many, it turns out. Dalgliesh fears that he faces his first failure, but he pulls this one out of the fire, with the help of Tigger, the cat ostensibly belonging to the dead woman.
