"Irene" was promising from the start; funny moments, quirky characters. I wish I knew what happened, but somewhere around the half hour mark, the swearing and sex references started and grew increasingly worse until I almost turned it off. The F word was prominent throughout followed by the phrase "SMD" (abbreviated), which was uttered by nearly everyone in the movie-even the residents of the senior living facility.
Had this movie not had all of the swearing and disgusting sex talk (references, etc), it could have been great; inspiring even. Irene for the most part is a likeable character who worships Geena Davis (who narrates the movie, talks to Irene and-and appears briefly in the film toward the end) , but even she joined the "sex talk/swearing" crowd eventually.
The thing I hated about this movie is that all of this swearing and sex talk was completely unnecessary. The basic storyline is about a girl who is ridiculed for her weight and her looks but doesn't let it stop her from her dreams. Even Geena Davis mentions in the movie that she'd made a movie called "Earth Girls Are Easy'" and that it didn't ruin her. Kind of an ironic statement given that she chose to do a movie like this. There was no nudity, but seriously, what kind of high school would send kids who were suspended to a senior living facility where the resident are just as bad with the sex talk and swearing as the students?
The music was great and I loved that Geena Davis was the main focus of Irene's quest to follow her dream. I loved that this movie takes place in Canada but the swearing.... Yes, I know I keep going back to that, but it completely ruined what could have been an amazing movie. The previews make it look great, but I ended up fast-forwarding the movie until I got to Gena Davis' scene and then again toward the end.
Watching this movie makes me want a remake and I really hope someone will do it, sans swearing and sex talk, but if that happened, I would guess that the movie would be about fifteen minutes long. Just a terrible, terrible movie with a great message. That is a tragedy because so many young girls could benefit from watching this, but I wouldn't wish this movie on anyone.

A mildly amusing film about high school meanness.
Our victim here is a sweet, feisty innocent with hope in her heart and Geena Davis in her head.
How can anything go wrong?

controlled by a mother who made her own mistakes years ago, Irene breaks the bonds with a little help from her friends and Gina Davis's sage advice

Endearing. Very funny. Realistic. Sex jokes kind of inevitable considering the time we live in. My 13 year old daughter and I laughed and cheered. We LOVE that it is Canadian. Would love to meet the main character. When others pick on you "EAT THE MEAT AND SMILE"!!! 5 out of 5.

The Storyline was ok but I did not enjoy all the swearing and sex talk. I would be embarrassed to take my date out to see something with this kind of language. I guess I was brought up different.

It's a rare movie that treats both teens and seniors as individuals deserving of respect, and not groups to make fun. This movie does that and still brings the belly laughs. Irene is a bullied teen, but she knows who she is, and she manages to show her senior friends how much fun life can still be, as well as show her mom how strong she is. A great movie for everyone.

This movie was an unexpected pleasure. I found it was very empowering without being too predictable. And to top it off it was shot in Hamilton! Lovely little movie.

Not quite as good as Mills' earlier film, Guidance, but still quite clever, fun, and ultimately endearing. And yes, that's the real Geena Davis!

This comedy film is about an overweight girl who is often bullied and made fun of, until she is suspended and is forced to spend two weeks volunteering at a retirement home. Little do the retired men and women know, she has signed them up for a reality dance show. This movie is really quirky and has some hilarious yet touching moments, with a main character that you can’t help but to empathize with. I found the movie worth the watch and would recommend it to those who can perhaps relate to the storyline. I would rate this movie 4/5 stars. @The_Reviewer of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

The message to stay true to yourself is good, but physical retaliation against a bully is not a positive message. Michelle McLeod is fabulous in the lead role.
