Lady Fortescue (Poor Relations series) is more interesting than Agatha, and I'd much rather spend time with the villagers of Lochdubh (Hamish Macbeth series) than the people in Cotswold, but this series is tightly written, with interesting people and odd murders.
Warning: if you get the paperback, the "preview" at the back will spoil the next few books as it starts with a complete spoiler for the next 14 books. Don't look unless you are the kind of person who reads the last chapter first.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this series, which I am reading in order of publication. The stories are well-written and definitely cozy but not cutesy. There is a good dose of humor in this book, which I appreciated.
