Perhaps more than any other author in the field, Lawrence Block has reinvented contemporary noir fiction--instilling the classic private eye novel with new life and literary depth, while retaining its raw power, grit, suspense, and surprise. For his efforts he has received multiple Edgar, Shamus, and Maltese Falcon Awards--wining virtually every honor the genre has to bestow--and has been named Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America P.I. Matthew Scudder remains among Block's most memorable and exquisitely developed creations--a flawed and complex protagonist whose stark, unassailable humanity is both his greatest weakness and strength. A new breed of entrepreneurial monster has set up shop in the big city. Ruthless, ingenious murderers, they prey on the loved ones of those who live outside the law--knowing full well that criminals will never run to the police no matter how brutal the threat. So other avenues for justice must be explored--which is where ex-cop-turned-p.i. Matthew Scudder comes in. Scudder has no love for the drug dealers and poison peddlers who now need his help. Nevertheless, he is determined to do whatever it takes to put an elusive pair of thrill-kill extortionists our of business. For they are using the innocent to fuel their terrible enterprise.

Lawrence Block creates another bestseller with A Walk Among The Tombstones.
The Matthew Scudder character is the example of what lasting mystery characters are made of. Most characters take a downward spiral in a series (because, come on, how many believable adventures can people have in a lifetime?). But, through Block’s brilliant writing style, only tidbits and glimpses of Scudder’s personal life are given. This character may indeed live on to another fictionally realistic adventure.
The action and suspense alone has made this book an instant Hollywood hit. Block takes a mundane mystery template and creates a fantastically authentic tale complete with fresh, and terrifying, details. If this is what goes through Block’s head on a daily basis, I don’t think I want to meet this author in a dark alley.

Haven't read Block since his excellent Thief Who Couldn't Sleep series, and forgotten what I missed. Very good read, although some gruesome violence against women characters.

Great book with easy to hate villains. Some horrific violence against women that might be too tough to take for some readers. I really like Matt's inner-city and very smart sidekick. Hope he shows up in later stories.

(Also available as e-book from another Bay Area Library). Must be a shocking novel and an eye opener on hacking the telephone company with an old laptop and modem back in 1992. For that it deserves a 4 star. However, not so much these days. Anyway, story was about a team of gruesome sadistic predators going after the beloved women of cash rich drug dealers in NYC ... Matt had to save a teen from being another victim.
