I couldn't get into this book. I've seen Oprah's show and it seems to me that Kitty Kelley was trying to bash Oprah and make her seem like a witch. It could be just me but I don't like it when people are put down.
Interesting, also pretty catty in a backhanded way. This is the first book by Kitty Kelley I've ever read, so I don't know how truthful she is, although she at least makes it sound like she's done her research. I don't find it surprising that Oprah had overwhelming ambition from the start, or even that she may have altered facts about her childhood to fit her public-image needs as an adult. I was surprised by the overwhelming amount of control over her staff and guests with privacy contracts etc., and even how she prevented her father from writing his book. It does make you wonder why she wants/ needs this control. However, even if all the facts are true, I think this fails as a biography because we never get a sense of who Oprah is, her motivations, what makes her tick, who she is as a person. Instead it seems like an accumulation of facts written in a way (for the most part) to make Oprah look as bad as possible. I am not a huge Oprah fan, but you have to admire her at the least for becoming one of, if not the most influential woman in America. Even an analytical account of how she got to where she is today and why would have been more interesting. I will not waste my time with anything else Kitty Kelley has written.
Oprah always kind of creeped me out but I did watch on occasion and sometimes the show was interesting. I heard that Kitty Kelley was a really nasty biographer so I picked this up for no other reason that the book was there and I was in the mood for something silly. However, I will admit that this is a terrific read: Kelley is actually quite fair and backs everything up. If you want to know how Obama became president of the USA, read this. How this woman got to be so powerful is beyond me but on top of that, she was astute enough to launch several careers (Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil). This is a good read for a Sunday afternoon.
it is what it is...the real Oprah put out there...glad I never watched her show on tv for she is a true hyprocrite and a liar to name a few! Worth the read by all the Stay At Home Moms who were captivated by her!
A complete REETA SKEETER...Horrible! Worst book I ever read, but for the pictures...Its as if the write only has her own interests at heart...Just like the Rita Skeeter of Harry Potter this one seems to have her own quick quotes quill as well!
the basic question is not answered ; is oprah strait, bent, bi or asexual or what!
all kitty has to say about it is that a guy hired to fix up part of oprahs house says he never saw oprah and steadman show any physicallity when they were together. hell i wouldnt grope my girlfriend in front of the hired help either! so what!
I think you'd need to be an Oprah disciple to plough through this. I really don't care enough.
