I love this fantasy movie! VERY atmospheric, high-drama, and downright kaleidoscopic! I'm a student of Chinese history, art and language; this movie is NOT trying to be historically accurate, AT ALL, that's not it's aim. It IS a good movie to practice your 中文 and 普通话 with by switching between the English and Chinese dubs and subtitle languages.
This movie has great visual effects. I especially like the big battle scene with thousands of golden armored soldiers fighting before the Palace, the ground was full of yellow Chrysanthemums. The outfits of the Emperor and the Empress were very unique and special, a large Dragon was embroidered in the front of the Emperor's robe while a Phoenix for the Empress.
The movie was directed by Zhang Yimou with two big stars Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li. Well worth watching.
Fantastic set design; sumptuous, highly esthetic Tang Dynasty era extravaganza, with a first-class acting ensemble - - superlative!
An epic finale battle scene, and some superb swordplay/martial arts scenes, but predominantly palace intrigue, with a cogent and lucid story arc - - ambition rules!
A fitting platform for Gong Li's talents, and newcomer Jay Chou engenders support!
No need to comment on Chow Yun Fat, he always delivers.
This is a 2006 Chinese tragic drama written and directed by Zhang Yimou.
The plot is based on Cao Yu's 1934 play "Thunderstorm (雷雨)", but is set in the Imperial court in ancient China.
Although it is a fascinating, captivating and entertaining piece, the whole storyline turns out unbelievable and unrelistic simply because the martial arts and battle scenes seem like fantasy.
In any case, it appears like an awe-inspiring epic.
Visually stunning with a compelling storyline and good acting. Treat yourself!
