Amazing read!!! Totally engaging characters and plot line! But be forwarned, try not to get too attached to a character because he/she will probably die. <3 Ned Stark and Ser Rodrick Cassel :)

The game of thrones series has brought me back to a good read. I have not read a book for decades, yes its true decades. Not only have I read book 1,2,3,4 and await the arrival of book 5 .I now have my son and his partner hounding me for its arrival as I foolishly got them reading my hand me downs. For Xmass they got me the first season on dvd and are now waiting for the second to come out in Apiril.SO THANK YOU Mr Martain you have made an addicted out of me.Talk about out of the frying pan and into the fire now I dont have time to play video games !!!

Very well-written but…ugh. My attitude toward books is usually “the bigger the better.” And since fantasy is one of my favorite genres, I was very excited to read this book. I understand the whole “grand epic adventure with far-reaching consequences that span kingdoms and generations” concept Martin was going for, but it left me with a bad case of mental bloat. I barely made it through this book, so the other four in the series will remain unread.

Coup de foudre! Dès la fin du premier chapitre. Martin a le don de nous lancer dans l'imprévisible.

I agree with the commentor below-I devoured the book as well. A compelling read. My favourite of its genre. Never a dull moment. Going to continue to read the series.

I devoured this book in about a week, and I never read fantasy. Now on to the next books in the series. Really, really, terrific.

A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin. Martin’s resume is nothing if not imposing: Locus Awards, Nebula Awards and Hugo Awards among others. Science fiction readers will recognize these recognitions as significant in the science fiction writers’ community. Martin’s mantle must be full with these awards of recognition of the writer’s craft. This book comes well recommended. Most of the comments by readers of this book are highly enthusiastic, although, predictable, a few are negative. The front covers lauds the author as #1 according to the New York Times. The book does not underwhelm (sometimes underwhelming is good): it’s BIG: well over 800 pages of novel. Am I up to it? This is not historical fiction that is set at a particular time and place with trees and animals with which we’re familiar. Here the flora and fauna are strange. Here even the seasons are skewed and last, sometimes, years. Martin has created his own, unique universe. What else that’s novel shall we encounter? Does this book engage? Yes, certainly. The first chapter’s over almost as soon as it’s begun. Hungrily the reader anticipates the next chapter. Do I have problems with this book? Yes. I have a hard time with made-up I can’t readily pigeon hole them names. My problem. But it imposes on the way I relate with the characters none-the-less. Well, I’ve burrowed myself into this book. There’s a taste of Harry Potter, a taste of Tolkien as well and I’m ashamed to say, I’m not impressed by Martin’s claim to litereary fame. Remember the rule of fifty? If the book hasn’t fully enveloped and enthralled you b y page 50, if it hasn’t made it impossible to put the book down by page 50 then it’s a dud? Well this one’s a dud. I figured that much out by page 38. There’s no credit to reading on and on just because you own a book and an author that have earned so many kudos. This book’s not for me. That’s it --- I’m outta here. There’s lots of books just dyin’ for me to read without wasting my time on this.

I love this book and i know i will be able to read it again and again Mr Martin outdid himself with this series! if you read the book and watched the first season on HBO you know that the show followed the book mostly but you know also that there are lots contained in the book that arent in the show. Never the less the book was excellent! I would recommend this book highly and i know i am going to purchase the set so i can have it on hand to read again! i have finished the fourth one and am waiting to get the fifth will comment soon on the other books in this series yes a lot of beloved characters were killed off but i read somewhere on line that the author admits to this but that he does it with passion! and that there are so many new characters who will be introduced so fans have no worries! anyone here if he is writing a sixth book yet?? sure hope so

Be prepared to read this book through different characters "points of view" in the form of chapters dedicated to a specific character each. You might have wished you could see and understand another big character's point of view in a different book you've read. In this book, you will have the opportunity to get exactly this kind of treat. If you get into this book, be prepared to want more. If you have friends who are also reading this book, that's even better, especially if they are interested in the whole series and not just this one book. The characters in this book are definitely worth talking about and can be very, very easy to relate to! At first, you might not get what's the big deal and wonder why this series became so popular in the first place (like I did), but if you keep reading, you might change your mind and finally understand what all the excitement is about!
